Goals Galore and Overtime Drama: Friday Night Hockey Highlights

Long Beach 3 @ Buzz 2 (OT) - The Long Beach Sharks battled through overtime to secure a gritty 3–2 victory over the Buzz in a tightly contested matchup. Long Beach opened the scoring in the first period and continued to generate steady pressure throughout the night, ultimately outshooting the Buzz 39–33. The Sharks added another goal early in the second period, but the Buzz responded with two tallies in the middle frame to even the score heading into the third. Both teams tightened defensively in the final period, forcing overtime after a scoreless third. In the extra frame, Jay Montgomery of the Sharks capitalized on the opportunity and netted the game-winner to complete the hard-fought road victory.

Maine 4 @ New Hampshire 5 - The New Hampshire Jr. Mountain Kings outlasted the Maine Nordiques in an entertaining 5–4 battle, with Noah Levesque leading the way with a hat trick, including two power-play goals. New Hampshire controlled the shot advantage 44–31 and capitalized on key special teams opportunities to stay ahead. Both teams traded early goals, with each side scoring twice in the first period, and matched tallies again in the second to keep the game tied heading into the third. The Mountain Kings pulled ahead with two goals in the final frame, while Maine managed a late response. Despite a strong push from the Nordiques, New Hampshire held firm down the stretch to secure the one-goal victory.

Norwich 2 @ New Jersey 3 - The New Jersey Titans edged the Norwich Sea Captains 3–2 behind a dominant performance from Yosef Pievsky, who recorded a hat trick to lead the offense. The teams traded goals in the opening period before Pievsky struck again in the second to give the Titans the lead. New Jersey continued to apply pressure throughout the night, outshooting Norwich 37–29 while goaltender Tony Shaw turned aside 27 shots to keep the Sea Captains at bay. Norwich pulled within one in the third period, but the Titans held strong defensively down the stretch to secure the narrow victory, clinching the final playoff spot in the East with the win.

Louisiana 9 @ Texas R 1 - The Louisiana Drillers delivered another dominant performance, rolling past the Texas RoadRunners 9–1 in a commanding offensive display. Louisiana controlled the game from start to finish, firing an incredible 67 shots on goal while limiting Texas to just nine. The Drillers exploded for four goals in the first period to immediately take control before adding two more in the second. Texas managed its lone goal early in the opening frame, but Louisiana’s relentless pressure continued throughout the night. The Drillers capped off the victory with three additional goals in the third period to finish off the lopsided win.

Carolina 4 @ Pelham 0 - The Carolina Rage delivered a complete performance, shutting out the Pelham Prowlers 4–0 while dominating the shot chart 54–20. Carolina struck first in the opening period and then broke the game open in the second with three unanswered goals to take full control. Garett Kocon led the offensive charge with a hat trick, while Mason Orr was flawless between the pipes, stopping all 20 shots he faced to secure the shutout. Despite a physical third period filled with penalties, the Rage maintained their defensive structure and closed out the convincing victory.

St. Louis 4 @ Rochester 7 - The Rochester Grizzlies had themselves a scoring frenzy over St. Louis on Friday, as they put seven up on the scoreboard. Eight minutes into play, Konnor Goclan opened the scoring for Rochester. Moments went by and they grabbed another, as Felix Wadstromer picked up his 20th of the season from a rocket. But at 2:26, Teagan Lee put the Blues within one by tying it before heading into the second. From the middle frame, though, the Grizzlies kept the momentum going, as ten minutes in, Mason Decker increased the lead back to two. But shortly after, the Blues answered right back, as it was done by Jack Reuss. And a minute later, they scored again, this time from Chase Kozma lighting it up from a setup by Eric Denny. If you blinked, you probably missed another one being scored, as 30 seconds after that, Decker grabbed another one with his response. 40 seconds after that one, the Blues answered right back, as Rece Sanderson picked up the phone. Less than a minute apart, Goclan grabbed another one to keep the exchange going. Late in the third, with a minute to play, Goclan collected a natural hat-trick to keep the lead in his team’s favour. And right off the centre ice faceoff, Jesse Varner buried one to seal the deal after Sam Paczan won the faceoff. 

Peoria 5 @ Wausau 6 - Two Central Division teams went head-to-head on Friday night as the regular season winds down, with the Wausau Cyclones narrowly taking down the Peoria Mustangs. Late in the first, Nathan Pleva opened the scoring on the power play run, and would sneak another one by shortly after while short-handed. From the middle frame, the Cyclones responded, as Maksim Salienko got it started, while Tucker Gretebeck tied the score from Mario Savino’s rebound. A minute later, Salienko fed Eiji Hoffmann to break the tie and take the lead. But shortly after, Owen Gruden would take back the lead for Peoria by scoring a pair. In the third, though, the Cyclones took control again, as they would put up three more to take back the lead. Alec Mellon jump started Wausau, as Brandon Piwko set him up. Several minutes later, Jackson Schroeder tucked one in. And they quickly kept it going, as Joel Anderson capitalized on the power play after Schroeder and Salienko’s cycle. Within two from tying it, the Mustangs put a final one in, when it was done by Hayden Gray. 

Mason City 2 @ Minnesota M 3 (OT) - The high-ranking Minnesota Moose narrowly defeated the Mason City Toros during Friday's matchup that went into overtime. Ten minutes into the first period Luca Salak opened the scoring, taking advantage from a play from Charlie Marchand. Early into the second, however, Dom Despenas tied things even. But 19 seconds before the buzzer, Mitch Gawel broke the tie with the go-ahead goal heading into the third. From the final frame, TJ Gibson tied it up squared to force an overtime period. In OT, Salak grabbed his second of the night, burying the game-winner, his 6th game-winner of the season.

Minnesota W 2 @ Alexandria 5 - Late into the first period, Caleb Waller picked up his 38th goal of the season to open the score for the Blizzard. Early into the middle frame, however, Owen Hunek tied the game for Minnesota. But a minute later, Jo Carpenter would quickly break the tie to keep the Blizzard’s lead. Seven minutes later, Caleb Waller would feed Grady Stallman to bury one short-side. However, 55 seconds after Stallman's goal,  Stratton Maas would respond to put Minnesota within one. But then five minutes later, Kaden Roness extended the lead to two. Now for the third, the Blizzard held off Minnesota from scoring anymore, but two minutes before the final horn, Maxim Lazo snuck one by to call it a game in Alexandria. 

Granite City 6 @ Willmar 3 - The Granite City Lumberjacks secured a decisive 6-3 victory on the road Friday night over the Willmar Warhawks. Granite City was able to grab the big road win in what was a dominating offensive display for their squad. The opening frame saw the Lumberjacks jump out to an early lead, with Tyler Starich opening the scoring with the assists from Micah Saxon and Garrett Plaude. Granite City quickly doubled their advantage, as Alexander Zelazowski found the back of the net off a feed from Easton Sankey, giving the Lumberjacks a 2-0 cushion heading into the first intermission. The offensive intensity continued into the second period. Granite City's Teagan Dodge added on with a goal of his own, assisted by Manny Pearce and Carter Oothoudt, before Tyler Starich notched his second goal of the night off assists from Cameron McCormack and Baylor Stebbins. The Warhawks found an answer as Wyatt Garvey scored a goal to grab some momentum for the home team, with Dylan Mees helping set it up. However, Granite City's Ty Smith capitalized on his own opportunity with feeds from Jonathan Hicks and Jackson Engberg to regain the four-goal lead. Willmar responded with Gabe Adams scoring a goal assisted by Parker Lycke and Lucas Thelen, only to see Granite City's Baylor Stebbins add another tally with passes from Jackson Engberg and Garrett Plaude. Despite a valiant third-period effort from the Warhawks, including a goal by Gabe Adams, they were unable to overcome the significant deficit. The Lumberjacks' defense held strong, limiting further scoring chances and securing the important divisional win. In net, Tate Metcalf for Willmar turned away 59 shots in a valiant effort against a relentless Lumberjacks offense. Granite City’s Nathan Mach on the other side earned the victory as he stopped 29 shots for his squad in a fantastic performance. With the victory, Granite City officially secured the number one seed in the West Division.

Austin 2 @ West Texas 1 (OT) - The Austin Ice Bats escaped with a 2-1 overtime victory over the West Texas Wranglers in a tightly-contested battle that ultimately came down to capitalizing on rare opportunities. The opening frame saw both sides struggle to find the back of the net, and despite physical play that led to early penalties for both teams, the score remained locked at zeros heading into the first intermission. Austin finally broke the deadlock early in the second period when Guhnar Hillman buried a chance off assists from Owen Rattray and Nolan DeAngelis. The Wranglers found an answer quickly, however, as William Andegren beat the keeper to grab the momentum heading into the third following a feed from Charis Tonle. Despite both teams mounting pressure throughout the final frame, neither side was able to find the equalizer in regulation against two physical defenses, sending the game into a decisive extra frame. The Ice Bats found the game-winner in overtime, as Mason Manderfield notched the game-winning goal with just seconds left on the clock off an assist from Luke Fowler. In net, the West Texas Wranglers put up a valiant effort with a relentless defensive performance against a high-volume attack, but they were narrowly outmatched by an Austin squad that peppered West Texas’ Garret Lant with 54 total shots. While for Austin, Tyler White was able to turn away 27 shots and secure the victory for his team.

Wisconsin 2 @ West Bend 1 (OT) - The Wisconsin Woodsmen secured a gritty overtime victory on the road Friday night, edging out the West Bend Power with a final score of 2-1. Despite playing in a hostile environment, the Woodsmen kept the home crowd quiet by snatching a crucial win to bolster their season record. Wisconsin struck first in the opening period when Tristan Pownall found the back of the net, capitalizing on assists from Josh Kauppinen and Parker Holloway to grab an early advantage. The Power refused to go away quietly, finding an equalizer during the second frame when Michael Maillette beat the goaltender to knot the game at one apiece. Tristan Hearley and Armani Fisher provided the helpers on the play that shifted the momentum back toward the home team. After a scoreless third period where both defenses refused to budge, the contest shifted into sudden-death. In overtime, the Woodsmen needed very little time to end it, as Tristan Pownall buried his second goal of the evening off another feed from Parker Holloway to seal the win. While the West Bend Power dominated the shot department with a relentless 40-shot barrage against Wisconsin’s Lleyton Jaschke, the Woodsmen's defensive stand proved superior despite only firing 15 shots of their own.

New Mexico 2 @ El Paso 4 - The El Paso Rhinos secured a resilient 4-2 victory Friday night over the New Mexico Ice Wolves, continuing their dominant run through the South Division. In a contest defined by special teams and defensive grit, the Rhinos managed to fight off a determined road squad and add a crucial tally to their win column. In the first, El Paso set the tone with two quick shorthanded goals; Carter Lehmann struck first, followed shortly by Kenneth Cadwallader burying a chance off a feed from Boston Cornic. The Ice Wolves answered before the intermission as Alvaro Ramazzini found the back of the net with help from Hunzeker Piersimoni and Alex Ihling, cutting the lead to one. After a scoreless second period where both defenses tightened up, the tension carried into the final frame. New Mexico managed to tie the battle up at two apiece when Calahan Butler beat the keeper off an assist from Ryan Hoogsteen. However, the Rhinos would not be denied as Kenneth Cadwallader grabbed his second of the night late in the period, set up by Carter Lehmann, to regain the lead. El Paso then iced the game with an empty-netter in the final seconds, as Cadwallader completed his hat trick off a pass from Evan White. The defensive effort was bolstered by the Rhinos' ability to weather a late surge. Backed by Brayden Macko’s 34 saves in net, they walked away with their 28th victory of the year in a key series to determine seeding and home ice advantage for playoffs.

Gillette 2 @ Badlands 5 - The Gillette Wild traveled to face the Badlands Sabres in a tightly contested Friday night matchup. The first period remained scoreless for both teams. The Sabres broke the stalemate three minutes into the second period as Carter Kilen found the back of the net. Donovan Balek answered for the Wild with six minutes left in the frame to even the score at one. Just three minutes later, Matthew Cordiis restored the Sabres’ lead to make it 2-1. With only thirteen seconds remaining in the period, Balek tallied his second of the night to tie the game at two. In the third, however, it was all Sabres, as they scored three unanswered goals, including one on the power play, to secure a 5-2 victory.

Yellowstone 0 @ Sheridan 6 - The Yellowstone Quake faced off against the Sheridan Hawks on Friday night, with the Hawks earning a dominant 6-0 victory. The scoring began just five minutes into the game when Kiefer Dunham opened the scoring for Sheridan. The Hawks added two more goals in the first period from Max Krueger and Zachary Marsell to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. The second period remained scoreless as both teams battled to a stalemate. In the third, Dunham struck again on the power play with just under six minutes to play. Sheridan would tack on two more goals before the final buzzer, both coming from Daniel Shelden, to seal the 6-0 win.

Great Falls 3 @ Butte 4 (OT) - The Great Falls Americans traveled to face the Butte Irish on Friday night. Despite outshooting Butte 76-30, the Americans fell 4-3 in overtime. The Irish struck first in the opening period at 14 minutes on a goal by Jacob Avgustovskiy, but Great Falls responded seven minutes later to tie it at 1 heading into the first intermission. In the second, Cooper Clouse scored the only goal of the period on the power play, giving the Americans a 2-1 lead. Just 30 seconds into the third, Great Falls extended their lead to 3-1, but the Irish battled back, scoring twice on the power play at 9:06 and 2:05 to knot the game at 3. Overtime was needed, and Butte’s Keegan Adams proved the hero with a goal just 16 seconds from the end. Netminder Mathieu Chernauckas was spectacular, stopping 73 of 76 shots for a 0.961 save percentage as the Irish took the 4-3 overtime victory.

Helena 10 @ Bozeman 5 - The Helena Bighorns traveled to take on the Bozeman Icedogs Friday night in a high-scoring affair, coming away with a 10-5 victory as two Bighorns players recorded hat tricks. Helena got on the board just one minute into the first period with a goal from Kade Pareja, followed by Austin Tyler and Ty Schell scoring before the 15-minute mark. Bozeman answered with a goal from Seth Hanson to make it 3-1, but Austin Uecker and Cal Kellenberg added goals before the period ended, giving Helena a 5-1 lead. In the second, Uecker notched his second goal of the night to extend the lead to 6-1. Bozeman’s Lex Steckelberg responded with a goal to cut the deficit to 6-2, but in the final seven minutes of the period, Schell and Uecker each completed their hat tricks, pushing the Bighorns’ advantage even higher. The Icedogs mounted a comeback effort in the third with three goals, but it wasn’t enough.
